Uncovering the Limitations of CIPP Repair: What CIPP Can and Can’t Do

CIPP lining is one of the most versatile and effective pipe repair methods available. It minimizes damage to surrounding streets, yards, and concrete. It extends pipe life by as much as 50 years. And it takes almost no time to complete.

But what are the limitations of CIPP repair? And do those limitations outweigh the benefits of adding CIPP lining services to your plumbing business?

What Are the Limitations of CIPP Repair?

Most pipe repairs are more than appropriate for cured-in-place lining, but there are a few limitations of CIPP repair that could require more invasive action. As long as a pipe retains at least some of its structural integrity, CIPP lining works. But if the pipe can’t withstand additional pressure, or if it’s already failed, alternatives need to be considered.

Collapsed Pipes

When pipes collapse, the restricted diameter makes it difficult for CIPP repair equipment to get through the entire length. CIPP equipment also can’t add sufficient pressure to the line to expand collapsed pipes properly. Other methods like pipe bursting or directional drilling may work better in these cases. But, more often than not, digging trenches for a full replacement may be necessary.

Major Corrosive Issues

CIPP repair relies on the structural integrity of the host pipe. But if the pipe has so much corrosion that it can’t withstand additional internal pressure or stresses, it will break apart when a CIPP liner is inserted and inflated. Again, pipe replacement is the most likely alternative. Pull-in-place and spray-in-place lining are likewise ineffective, although slip lining could work.

Pipe Bellying

One of the limitations of CIPP repair is that it can’t correct slope issues already in the pipe line. Bellying in the lines won’t change by adding a liner. Resin liners conform to the shape of the pipe, including these bellies. The slope itself needs to be corrected. In these cases, full replacement of the pipe section is the best option.

What Can CIPP Lining Repair Fix?

Clearly, there aren’t many limitations to CIPP repair. Instead, you’ll find that most of your basic repairs can be addressed by CIPP, and it can even eliminate many replacement needs. The resin cures quickly, provides watertight seals, and lasts for decades. And it cuts down on the time that trenching requires to rehabilitate yards and concrete.

Cracked Pipes

CIPP repair is perfect for cracked pipes. So long as the pipe section still has structural integrity, inversion liners can repair cracks quickly and permanently. The air or water pressure used to inflate the resin-impregnated liner pushes it into the cracks securely to create an impenetrable seal.

Leaks and Minor Corrosion

Pinhole leaks and non-structural corrosion issues don’t require replacement if you choose CIPP instead of conventional repair. Hardened resin completely seals small leaks, and it can keep corrosion from traveling further into the pipe structure by keeping wastewater and other liquids away from the host pipe.

Root Intrusion

Clay and cast iron pipes frequently suffer damage from roots. But the CIPP repair process is ideal for eliminating root intrusions. By cleaning the compromised pipe, and then permanently sealing out future intrusions, even old pipes can see years of extended use. Roots can’t break through a properly installed resin liner, so it’s the perfect solution for residential sewer pipes that stretch under landscaping and concrete work.

The Benefits of Adding CIPP Repair to Your Business

From its versatility to its minimally intrusive process, CIPP lining services can expand your business into a whole new customer base.
